REBEL BRIDE - NEW TASMANIAN RACING QUEEN North-West mare Rebel Bride took over the mantle as Tasmania's new queen of racing when she won the $150,000 Bow Mistress Stakes at Elwick on February 5. Rebel Bride is owned by former jockey Chris Wickham and his wife Sharon at Latrobe and is prepared for them at Spreyton by Leon Wells. The win in the Group 3 Bow Mistress was Rebel Bride's fifth win on the trot and took the mare's stake earnings to $147,000. At Elwick Rebel Pride beat Tasmania's millionaire mare Lady Lynette and last-start Victorian winner Avionics. Rebel Bride has been ridden by Craig Newitt in her past two wins and he was full of praise for the four-year-old when he returned to scale. He said Rebel Bride had a tremendous will to win and suggested that she could go further. Rebel Bride is now heading to the spelling paddock after finishing a close third to Lady Lynette and Buzzing Along in the $100,000 Vamos Stakes at Mowbray.

CLARE LINDOP - TASMANIAN GUINEAS Leading Adelaide jockey Clare Lindop received an extra thrill from winning the $90,000 Tasmanian Guineas at Mowbray on January 4. Lindop and trainer Leon Macdonald made the trip from South Australia to win the feature thee-year-old race with Moving Money. After being perfectly ridden by Lindop, Moving Money just lasted in a photo finish from local three-year-olds Barysh Quest and Anelene. Lindop has made regular visits to Tasmania's big race meetings and it is also an opportunity for her to catch up with her parents Clive and Maggie who live just out of Hobart. Clive and Maggie were in the grandstand at Mowbray and eagerly cheered on their daughter to another feature win. Lindop's biggest win in Tasmania was the 2005 Launceston Cup on Dakashy. Macdonald, also, has captured many of the State's biggest races over the years including Dakasha, the Tasmanian Derby and Hobart Guineas with Almost Never and the Thomas Lyons Stakes with Umrum. Lindop and Macdonald have proved a formidable combination with their biggest success coming in the 2008 Victoria Derby with Rebel Raider.

Tasmanian racing lost one of its stalwarts with the passing of Col Skirving on July 21. Skirving had spent a lifetime in racing being involved in administration, breeding and racing as well as spending 25 years as a member of TROA. He served firstly on the Northern committee of TROA before becoming a member of the inaugural State council. He was employed by the Tasmanian Racing Directorate for many years and his involvement with breeding extended to arranging for sires Theus and Bold Mayo to come to the State. Stratos Star and Rise To The Stars were two of the more successful horses raced by Skirving. His funeral was held at Kings Meadows on July 27. His widow Pat is now looking for an appropriate home for several leather bound stud breeding books which were in his possession

CRAIG NEWITT - RIDES WINNER FOR HIS WIFE Craig Newitt may have failed in his bid to win a fifth Devonport Cup in January but he did kick home one important winner on the day. Lightly raced mare Beckett's Star is part-owned by his wife Karli and other family friends and she won her first race for the connections on Devonport Cup day. ``Ï would like to have won a little more easily so I could give the owners a salute,'' Newitt said after the race. Beckett Star was previously trained in Victoria by Stephen Theodore when she was noticed by Newitt's good mate Trent Wells who is one of Australia's leading jumps jockeys. Wells thought the mare would be a handy acquisition to his father Leon's Spreyton stables and she is raced by his girlfriend Leah Grogan, his sister Leana and Newitt's wife Karli. The win of Beckett Star at Spreyton gave connections an extra thrill as the race was named in honour of former TROA life member Graeme Dean who died in July last year. Leon Wells said he regarded Dean as a very good friend and had known him since he was a teenager at Turners Beach. ``I remember Graeme visiting his grandfather Jack Stubbs at his stables and my father had stables just over the road,'' he said. Dean's widow Helen presented connections with their winning trophies.

TROA OUTRAGE - REDUCED STAKEMONEY TROA president Alison Archer has become one of the first thoroughbred administrators to respond to Tasracing's decision to decrease stakemoney in the future. She said Tasracing's decision would force owners to lose faith in the local racing scene and pursue their interests interstate. Archer has called for an immediate meeting of Tasmania's key industry groups _ owners, trainers and breeders _ to unite and lobby Tasracing. ``It's time for the industry to stand up and be counted,'' she said. To read Archer's comments published in The Examiner on March 24. Click here TROA threw its support behind an industry rally held at the Mowbray racecourse on April 9.

LAUNCESTON CUP 2012 - PREVAILING Lightly raced stayer Prevailing prevented local champion Geegees Blackflash from making a clean sweep of the summer racing carnival when he beat him in the $225,000 Launceston Cup at Mowbray on February 29. Prevailing is prepared by the premier training partnership of David and Scott Brunton at Seven Mile Beach giving them their first Launceston Cup victory. Geegees Blackflash, who had won the Newmarket Handicap and the Hobart Cup in this preparation seemed set for victory when he dashed clear at the top of the straight only to be run down by Prevailing in the closing stages to be beaten by a neck. The five-year-old was ridden by Victorian jockey Anthony Darmanin who has resurrected his career with his decision to ride in Tasmania on a regular basis. The Bruntons brought Prevaling as a weanling and the gelding is raced by a syndicate of owners which include's David's wife Julie along with Brett Williams, Anthony Bratt, Dennis Verrios, Kevin Bowd, Sue Butler and Tommy Fotak. Prevailing was the first Tasmanian-trained horse to win the Launceston Cup since St Andrews in 2003. Fieldmaster, trained by former champion jockey Patrick Payne, filled third place behind Prevailing and Geegees Blackflash.

HOBART CUP 2012 - GEEGEES BLACKFLASH There were local cheers around the Elwick racecourse when top Tasmanian stayer Geegees Blackflash won the $225,000 Hobart Cup on February 12. The win capped the five-year-old's brilliant career which already included wins in the Tasmanian Derby and the Newmarket Handicap. Geegees Blackflash came with a well-timed run under the guidance of Victorian jockey Peter Mertens and held off Viking Hero and Dream Flyer to win Tasmania's biggest race. Geegees Blackflash is prepared at Brighton by popular trainer John Luttrell and gave Broadmarsh owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard their crowning achievement after making a huge investment in the local thoroughbred scene.

DEVONPORT CUP 2012 - DREAM FLYER Dream Flyer completed a family double when he stormed to victory in the Devonport Cup at Spreyton Park on January 11. The five-year-old is a half-brother to 2011 winner Dream Pedlar and both horses are prepared at Longford by Troy Blacker. Blacker became the first trainer in over 30 years to train the Devonport Cup winner two years in a row. His intention now is to set Dream Flyer for the $225,000 Hobart Cup at Elwick on February 12. Dream Flyer was ridden by Tasmania's premier jockey Brendon McCoull who was keenly looking forward to the mount in the Hobart Cup but unfortunately his summer racing carnival came to a premature end a week after the Devonport Cup when he broke his collarbone in a fall at Mowbay. Dream Flyer beat home local galloper Catwen Boy and South Australian visitor Uchimura. Both Dream Flyer and Dream Pedlar were bred and are raced by Hobart doctors Robert Nightingale and Rob Mee.

TROA SECRETARY - PROVOCATIVE THOUGHTS TROA's State council secretary Keith Butterworth has come out with some provocative thoughts on the direction of racing in Tasmania. In his sights are the State
Government and the key racing bodies Tote and Tasracing. He claims the State
Government merely pays lip service to racing without fully appreciating
its worth to employment and the rural economy. To read Keith's thoughts on the present state of racing in Tasmania click here. (return to the top)

TROA STATE COUNCIL - CHANGES The State council of TROA could undertake a restructure following decisions made at the annual meeting in November. The meeting decided that the council would move from the regional representation of Southern, Northern and North-West delegates to a single State body to service the interest of owners.
As per the motion at the TROA Annual
General Meeting held 30 September 2009 at Ross the Constitution will be
changed in order for the body to become a statewide body rather than 3
separate divisions. Each member of the Council has studied the
Constitution and suggested some relevant changes needed and discussed at
the meeting on January 13
A draft constitution has been proposed by the TROA Council and will be finalised at a meeting at Ross on March 10th 2010 before a special meeting to be convened in accordance with the current constitution with proper notice of alterations etc, having been given to all members or at an adjourned meeting called for the purpose of the alteration to be held at Ross May 2010. All financial members of TROA are entitled to an electronic copy of the Constitution and any by laws as well as any amendments. I hope these changes are seen by all members as a means of providing a strong and united organisation which can provide a unanimous and credible voice on behalf of all owners". It is anticipated that a new Constitution will be available for members to sign off
within a few weeks. Elections will then conducted to put the new Committee in place. |
